It’s hard to believe that it’s already been 30 years since the timeless, classic movie Forrest Gump made its way into the theatres and into our hearts.
It made me reflect on the fact that no matter who are and whatever stage we are in your life, we can make it through life’s adversities with grace, resilience, determination, integrity, and love. The movie had an emotional impact on me as well as became a source of motivation and inspiration, especially when going through those rough road bumps.
Let’s look at some of Forrest Gump quotes and how they can teach us valuable lessons on how to lead a kind, simple life and have a positive impact not only on ourselves but for those around us as well.
“Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.”
Life is unpredictable and full of surprises, some of which we will enjoy and be delighted with, while others will be less fulfilling and challenging. Whichever chocolate we get, they represent a choice we make to overcome our obstacles, never give up, and always move forward. Be open-minded and taste life. It’s always worth a try since you’ll never know what you’re capable of if you don’t try.
“Stupid is as stupid does.”
Because of his learning disability, Forrest Gump was frequently asked if he was stupid, to which he replied, “Stupid is as stupid does.” Basically, people are not stupid; it’s their behaviour that makes them so. We shouldn’t judge people by their appearance. You are what you do, not what you say you are going to do. Actions always speak louder than words.
“You have to do the best with what God gave you.” Mrs.Gump
We are all born with God’s given talents. Even what we consider defects or problems, there are gifts to be found there as well. Embrace the opportunities and seize those precious moments. We don’t have to be the best; just be our best. We all make mistakes. Be humble and learn from them.
“And cause I was a gazillionaire, and I liked doin it so much, I cut that grass for free.”
Follow your heart and don’t be afraid to pursue your passions. If you love what you do and do what you love, you’ll never consider it work. You can bring joy and happiness into every moment by staying honest with your heart’s true desires.
“Mama said there’s only so much fortune a man really needs, and the rest is just for showing off.”
It’s great to give back and share the wealth. Learn to spend time on what matters most to you. Enjoy the simple things in life, like spending time with your loved ones, going for a walk in nature, and watching the sunset. Spread the kindness and be generous.
“Forrest Gump: What’s my destiny, Mama? Mrs. Gump: You’re gonna have to figure that out for yourself.”
Look inside, stay true to yourself, show up, do the hard work, make the most of every opportunity, embrace new experiences, take the risk, and go for your dreams and goals.
Don’t be afraid of trying new things. Destiny is the result of you deciding what you want to do. Don’t waste time worrying about what others think you should do or not do.
“Don’t ever let anybody tell you that they’re better than you.” Mama Gump
Self-esteem is how you feel about yourself and self-confidence is what you do for yourself. Remain true to yourself and embrace all of who you are. You are not just your strengths but also your weaknesses. Loving yourself is about self-acceptance. No need to apologize for who you are. You are unique. Respect people, treat everyone the same, and above all, be kind.
“My mama always told me that miracles happen everyday, some don’t think so, but they do.”
Whatever you believe you can do, you can achieve it. Don’t ever doubt yourself, and don’t limit yourself. Create the magic by believing. Whatever you imagine, you can plant that seed of your dreams and turn them into reality. Put on those magic shoes and RUN, Forrest, RUN.
“Mama always said, ‘put the past behind you before you can move on’.”
Forrest Gump was the inspiration for the bumper stickers, “Shit happens.” No matter what life throws our way, focus on the solution, not the problem. Always be positive, especially when there are negative hurdles to overcome. By looking at the bright side of things, we can look ahead and know that better days are coming. Pain can be transformed into something productive, just like Forrest starting running to channel his suffering.
“Mama always had a way of explaining things so I could understand them.”
Nowadays, with smart phones and texting and Instagram and Facebook and X and so on, the quantity of communication has increased but the quality has decreased. The importance of being face to face and keeping it real and honest is vital for our mental health. Pay attention by learning to listen and being present with no distractions. The goal of communication is to understand and be understood. This is how you create meaningful connections and feel supported. You also gain new insights and learn so much by sharing with others.
Forrest Gump’s message is about embracing courage, compassion, hope, and authenticity. Seeing the world through his eyes makes us appreciate and cherish life. Accept life as it happens, while making adjustments along the way. In the search for peace and happiness, it comes down to doing the right thing by keeping your morals, values, and faith in tact. When faced with life’s adversities, remember to get better, not bitter.
