You Got This

Feeling depressed? Down in the dumps? Unhappy? Overwhelmed, especially at this time of the year?

Remember this: if we rearrange the letters in the word “depression,” we get “I pressed on.”

When we are depressed, it may feel like we are stuck and have difficulty getting out, but in essence, it’s not true even though it feels that way.

Case in point: Newton’s First Law of Motion and Inertia states that an object in motion stays in motion and an object at rest stays at rest unless acted upon. Depression may feel like we are stuck in the mud, but there are tools to help us get moving:

TAKE  A.C.T.I.O.N.

A

Acknowledge and accept what you are going through without judgement or beating yourself up. The first step is to become mindful that you are in the ditch.

C

Choose to do a few simple tasks, and slowly you will build up momentum and do more.

T

Take care of yourself. Go outside for a walk, get some exercise, and stay away from junk food. Stick to a regular sleep schedule, take a shower, and get dressed up in your favourite clothes. Instead of social media, get out and be social.

I

Inner reflection work will help you get your bearings: journaling, meditation, and creative projects.

By changing your perspectives, you can change your actions.

O

One step at a time. Focus on the step in front of you, not the whole staircase.

N

Never feel that you are walking alone. Instead of texting, call a trusted friend, or family. Find a counsellor or therapist; we all can use a little help and support to get inspired and moving. And above all, don’t forget to pray and remember that no matter where you are, God is always there, beside you. With hope and faith, you will find a way.

Keep on keeping on.
