Feeling stuck? Trapped? Lost? Confused? Unmotivated? Unfulfilled?
Do you feel like Bill Murray in the movie Groundhog Day?
Feeling stuck may seem like there’s no way out adding to your frustrations, but realize that this happens to all of us. For whatever reason you feel stuck, whether it be lack of clarity, having self-doubt, feeling overwhelmed, or allowing your fear of failure or making mistakes to take over, it usually signifies that you have hit an obstacle and it’s time for a reset. You need to find a way around it in order to keep moving forward. Our human nature is about movement, and our fundamental need for survival is growth. In order to sustain life, we must keep moving and use those challenges as opportunities for growth.
The first step in getting unstuck is to become aware of why you feel this way. The key word here is feel. Make the time and space to recognize those feelings and address them. If you don’t acknowledge and explore your emotions, you’ll end up going around in circles and not getting anywhere.
Feelings provide a wealth of information and help guide you to get to the root cause of your rut. Some therapeutic tools include making quiet time to tune in, writing in a journal, talking to a good friend, seeking professional help, taking a break, relaxing, having fun and being spontaneous, going for a walk, and enjoying nature.
Once you have processed your feelings, it’s time to reboot your mind and your thoughts. Determine what you want to do and consider your options. You need to step out of your comfort zone and confront your fears. Criticizing yourself at this point is counterproductive and will keep you stuck.
Create a plan and start with baby steps. One small step at a time will get you moving and build momentum over time. It is crucial to remain flexible and open to change.
Challenge yourself to learn something new. Break out of your old routine so you can create not only movement but also something to look forward to that keeps you going.
Focus on making progress not aiming for perfection. This is a process. Treat yourself better and with some effort, you can create the energy to keep things moving, feel excited about your next adventure, and regain your spark.
Sometimes things don’t go according to plan, but despite the challenges we may encounter, it is important to reconnect to what matters, redirect our plans, remain adaptable, and learn from our setbacks.
The river doesn’t complain or blame the rock in its way, nor does it stop. Instead it finds new ways to continue flowing and gains strength by being persistent. Stay calm and carry on.
