When we think of home, it is more than merely a physical structure we live in that provides us with shelter. What makes a house a home is how we feel. It’s a state of being where we feel comfortable, safe, appreciated, accepted, and loved – where we can kick off our shoes and be ourselves.

Regardless of your age or distance from home, many places can evoke a sense of home; it might be through a song, a book, a film, a smell, or a person. It is shaped by the moments we share with our loved ones and developed from those emotional ties. That emotional connection is what creates a strong attachment to home.

Even after enjoying a wonderful vacation, we feel homesick and look forward to going back home. Home is the place where our cherished memories allow us to feel like children once more, filled with inspiration, wholeness, and tranquility.

“There’s no place like family, and home is where the family is; it’s not even a specific location or address, but wherever you feel most comfortable and cherished.”- Cecilia Ahern

Our home is our psychological haven, surrounded by our family and friends. We also have a spiritual home that all of us share. Our heavenly home on Earth is a reminder that our spiritual journey itself is home and that Jesus resides within us all, as we are all God’s children and are never alone on this journey called life.

In addition to a feeling of peace and security, we feel understood and supported. By aligning with our values, we can find our sense of identity, belonging, and purpose and discover the true meaning of our lives.

Both families are rooted in love, which exists within us and all around us. Home can also be found in our community, where we can gather together to share experiences, strengthen our faith, cultivate our relationships with others, and feel free to be our authentic selves without the fear of judgment.

Just as our house must be built on a firm foundation, we also need to maintain our personal foundation rooted in love and connection. In the same way we nurture our relationships, we must also dedicate time with our Holy Father through prayer and by living our faith. Similarly, as our loved ones are glad to hear from us during our travels, God also awaits eagerly to hear from us throughout our journey.

Our home is our inner sanctuary where we can replenish our energy, gain enlightenment in all aspects of our lives, and evolve into the finest versions of ourselves. Home is truly where the heart is. It’s that cozy, warm, peaceful feeling that we all yearn for and which extends far beyond the four walls of a house. We can always find a home in the goodness and love of God.

“Home is what you take with you, not what you leave behind.” N.K.Jemisin

Home Sweet Home!

Antoinette Giacobbe, M.A.

(Photo by Emily Hoehenrieder on Unsplash) Most of us will remember this popular phrase from the movie The Wizard of Oz.
